Queen and Country

Just caught an item on BBCs Culture Show of Mark Kermode interviewing Steve McQueen (no not the one from The Great Escape, Bullitt and The Magnificent Seven as I first thought ’cause he died in 1980).

In the first part of the interview (which is online here) showed an art project by McQueen called Queen and Country.

“Official war artist and Turner Prize winner Steve McQueen, in collaboration with 137 families whose loved ones have lost their lives in Iraq, has created a cabinet containing a series of facsimile postage sheets, each one dedicated to a deceased soldier.”

Full details here where you can also sign a petition that the Royal Mail adopt this as a commemorative set of stamps for British troops.

I like many things about this concept, but mainly whether you are in favour of or against British action in Iraq this focuses on the individual people who have served and sacrificed for ‘Queen and Country’.
