Feeling kind of stunned after watching this film. Set in the near future – 2027 – just one generation from now and the UK is almost a police state. Infertility has stopped humans reproducing, immigrants are rounded up into ghettos in a climate of nationalistic violence. The main story set in this apocalyptic backdrop is about Theo trying to help a girl who somehow is pregnant to escape to safety (BTW all of this is in the trailer and I’ve not given away anything).
There is so much in this story to make you think. How close to anarchy are we at any point? What place does faith have in holding society together? What would it take for us to turn against migrant workers and asylum seekers – or have we done that already?
However, the most amazing thing about this film is how it is shot. All (or at least it seemed to me like ‘all’) the scenes with moving around, i.e. not just action scenes but well lots of the film is shot using hand held camera using very few cuts. This gives a hyper-realistic feel of the film, but how on earth did they shoot long action scenes involving running around and explosions..? Clive Owen is great in the lead and I think he is on screen all the time. Really well made technical film and incredibly thought provoking.

Theodore Faron (Clive Owen): I can’t really remember when I last had any hope, and I certainly can’t remember when anyone else did either. Because really, since women stopped being able to have babies, what’s left to hope for? |
